Winamp DSP

This guide explains how to broadcast music from Winamp

Here's 5 easy steps to get you streaming right away.

1) Install Winamp
2) Install Shoutcast Plugin
3) Activate The Plugin
4) Configure The Plugin
5) Connect To Your Shoutcast Stream

STEP 1 - Install Winamp

If you have Winamp installed, skip this step.

Download a copy of Nullsoft Winamp (Full) free from this location: http://www.winamp.com/player

Follow the on-screen prompts to install Winamp In some cases you may need to restart your PC after installation.

STEP 2 - Install Shoutcast Plugin

Winamp is a great player but it can't do everything. Plugins add features to Winamp, and we're going to install a Shoutcast plugin that lets you broadcast your music. The Shoutcast DSP plugin is an official Nullsoft plugin for just this purpose.

Close Winamp if it's open. Now download the Shoutcast plugin from the official website: http://www.shoutcast.com/downloads/shoutcast-dsp-1-9-0-windows.exe

you can safely ignore security warnings, download and run the installer. It will detect your installation of Winamp and add the plugin.

STEP 3 - Activate The Plugin

Sometimes this is automatic, sometimes not. First open Winamp. Do you see a gray dialog box come up, titled "SHOUTcast Source"? If you do see it then you can skip this step, as the plugin is already activated.

To activate the Shoutcast plugin press CTRL+P in Winamp, this opens the Preferences dialog. On the list of preferences on the left click on "DSP/Effect" (under the Plug-ins heading). The right will now list all the DSP plugins you have installed, and one of these should be "Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP v1.9.0". Select it and a new gray dialog will come up - keep the new one open. Click "Close" on the Preferences dialog.

Now we're ready to use the plugin!

STEP 4 - Configure The Plugin

The "SHOUTcast Source" gray dialog will be open all the time - it shows the current status of your stream, and lets you configure everything you need. The "Output" tab sets up your Shoutcast connections,  The "Encoder" tab lets us choose an audio codec (such as MP3) and the "Input" tab lets you broadcast live audio or MP3s played inside Winamp.

Encoder setup. Click the "Encoder" tab and select "Encoder 1". Set the Encoder Type to "MP3 Encoder" and the Encoder Settings to "128kbps or 96kbs  44.100kHz, Stereo". This means we will be broadcasting our MP3 stream at a good high quality with stereo output.

Under the "Input" tab make sure "Winamp" is selected in the dropdown box.

Select the "Output" tab - this will contain the connection details for your Shoutcast stream. We'll do this now.

STEP 5 - Connect To Your Shoutcast Stream

Go back to your "SHOUTcast Source" dialog and select the "Output" tab. Select "Output 1" from the list. Click the "Connection" tab and type in the address/host, port number and password. Select "1" under the Encoder dropdown (we set up the encoder earlier).

You're now ready to stream! Click the "Connect" button top-right.
